THE BODY

The band is STILL on tour. Which is ridiculous, I know. I KNOW. But just when I was starting to forget what Alex's face looks like (there's some brownish bits...and a mouth, yeah I think there's a mouth...), the powers that be dropped this painfully adorable new video in my lap. Considering that they had all of one afternoon with the band to shoot this thing, I'm really impressed with how pro it came out. And also: the children. I'm generally not so jazzed when it comes to the small people, but man, if I could have beautiful children that only came out at magic hour and only moved in slow motion...The worst part? Little Alex was EVEN CUTER in real life. I'd show you a photo but you might just spew all over your monitor.

So anyways, I hope you guys are having a great weekend, and I hope you too get a chance to go out and run around and bash things with sticks. Why should all these professionally-good-looking kids have all the fun right? Just promise me you wont wear your glasses in the water--those things don't grow on trees mister!

Words can't begin to express how much I love this editorial from the October issue of Paris Vogue. It's so heavily inspired by David Bowie in his Thin White Duke/The Man Who Fell to Earth phase! I mean:

SO GOOD. I've always wanted to be David Bowie for Halloween, but a) I've never been able to find the right wig and b) I will never be able to afford these. Diamond-doggone it!!

gentlewoman 2 teaser

Magazines! Two that I am looking forward to with bated breath, and one I've already had my way with at B&N (and wish wish wish I could have afforded to take home!)

I don't usually end up buying Fantastic Man, as much as would like to, but this time it's different. It's personal. It's BRYAN. Plus, I promised a land-locked pal that I'd send him a copy, and I definitely intend to have my way with it first.

The last issue of the Gentlewoman was quite special and exciting, especially for a debut effort, and the second one looks no less promising. Beyond all that, it's just such a pretty object to have around. To me the design, typography, and layout could not be more satisfying.

And have you had a peak at the current issue of LOVE?? I grabbed a copy while waiting out that freak tornado the other day at Barnes and Noble, and emerged a solid two hours later blinking at the night sky. Amazing interview after amazing interview, so many fascinating women. My favorite was with Lauren Hutton, and I absolutely am dying to read the autobiography she speaks about working on. What a life! What a lady.

Sidney-sider

On hot, grouchy days when I can barely muster the strength to put on a dress and shoes, let alone even attempt to look "pulled together", I find myself coming back time and a again to this Style Like U feature on model/photographer/stylist Sidney Geubelle. Not only does she pull off a slew of perfect, hot-weather appropriate outfits, but she is so dang bubbly and sweet and energetic that I can't help but smile--even when the world outside feels like one big sweaty armpit.

While poking around, hoping to add a little bit more Sidney to my life, I came across these photos taken by Pieter-Jan de Pue for Dutch Vice. I love the dusty, eerie quality of the first two especially--I feel like they could have been taken in any number of decades, which I find fascinating.

just say...

Pet sitting/video editing/prepping for a job on Saturday is making my life crazy and non-conducive to creative blogging at the moment, but thankfully The Pains picked up some slack for me by releasing their insanely adorable new music video today. Even though it's hard for anyone to top crashing a Furry party, I think this might be my fave yet...

Beautiful photos of Hanne Gaby Odiele by Dylan Forsberg. Hanne is one of my very favorite models, maybe because she really looks like no one else. I think some people are a bit put off by her strong, somewhat strange features, but I find them truly fascinating. The fact that she also seems pretty rad in person (and has an adorable accent) doesn't hurt either!

BOXING DAY

How frickin' incredible does Chioma (my wonderful boss at FADER) look in her new Boxing Kitten Jumper?? Ack, it boggles the mind (and the eyeballz!) And reading about her childhood memories of visiting Africa, and the amazing Nigerian half of her family, on the FADER blog makes me love it (and her) that much more.

sun was high (so was I)

I don't usually get all that excited about new/current music, but when I do, I get EXCITED (think Girls here...) I've been listening to Best Coast, either on the stereo or in my brain, basically non stop for the last few weeks. I went and saw them play last night at Mercury Lounge and it was, yep, the best. There's a quality about Bethany's voice that I find irresistible--powerful, a bit of a rasp at the edges, occasionally seeming to teeter on the edge of breaking only to pull back at the last second.

Someone has made a couple of amazing videos for her songs using footage from old films. The one above is a scene from Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. Be sure to check out the one from Un Homme Et Une Femme as well! And go see Best Coast if you have the chance, you wont be sorry you did.

P.S. Funny story: before I ever knew who Bethany was or had heard of Best Coast, I used to follow her (now-defunct) flickr because she would always post amazing things like tatoos of bong-smoking dolphins. Fast forward several months, and I end up with an internship at FADER...only to find out eventually that Bethany held the same position as I did right before my arrival. She was responsible for the excellent Thrintage column, and by extension, for making me miss California even more than I already did, no small feat indeed.

Elisa Nalin

I've been puzzling over the identity of this woman for some time now. That outfit with the pink blazer and camel pants swept me off my feet when I saw it on style.com and then again on Mr. Newton. I had to know who she was, with her impeccable trouser collection and charmingly boyish gamine haircut.

Turns out, her name is Elisa Nalin, and she is a stylist and fashion director at Crash Magazine (where she recently styled this beautiful editorial.) I also realized that she was photographed by The Selby a while ago, and it was her insane shoe collection that I'd been drooling over all this time:

Sportmax also did a little interview with her, and she seems really charming. I wish I could find more photos of her candid style, she just blows me away every time!

I love these photos of Clémence Poésy from the April issue of Vogue UK. In the second photo she also happens to be wearing the Carvela suede boots from Kurt Geiger that I want so badly--but they don't ship to the US. Just as well since they cost a pretty penny (as so many pretty things do!)

pixiegeldof4alexac

I'm usually not the biggest fan of the shorts-over-tights look, primarily because I'm jealous of people with stick legs who can pull it off, but I really love how it looks on Alexa here. Almost makes me want to give it another shot, but with something dark, fitted and velvet instead of the various types of jeans shorts I've attempted in the past.

it's blitzed

I have a modest collection of ancient magazines that I leave sitting on the little coffee table in my childhood room--some choice issues of JANE, a copy of ID (the streakers issue!), and a Nylon or two, all of which played various roles in my development from sad nerd to the suave taste-maker I am today.

nylon004

This time, my attention was caught by a piece on Karen O and Christian Joy in a rusty old (read: still totally amazing) issue of Nylon. This is how I first can recall finding out about her and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I remember thinking what a crazy badass she seemed like. Also I just reeeaaally wanted to party with her.

nylon003

Eventually, I got to see them open for The White Stripes somewhere in the mid-aughts. I mostly just remember a bunch of drunk dudes yelling about how they wanted to bone her, which was uncalled for, but also understandable because I kind of wanted to bone her too.

Who's that Spartan in my tee-pee?

meinnyc-street-fashion-winter-outfits-1b

Ah, it seems like just yesterday that I ran into Eddie wending my way through the 'burg (it was a bit of an awkward ballet in retrospect--I wasn't wearing my glasses, he was gesticulating animatedly in my general direction...I crossed the street...) Actually, to be fair, it was several weeks ago (hey, these things take time), you can tell because I look way too jazzed on life in the outdoors for this to be recent heheh.

Thanks for making me look so rad, Mr. Newton, and thanks Refinery29 for shooting me down the ol' pipeline!
