two onesies

rompers

Thank you all SO MUCH for the travel/shopping advice!! My head is spinning just thinking about everywhere I'd like to go, but even if I only make it to a few of your recommendations I'm sure I'll have a blast.

I'm soooo excited, not least of all to be spending half of the dreary month of February in the part of the world where the sun is shining. I'm making room in my suitcase for shorts, big soft shirts to tuck in, and both of these rompers.
The pink one was a summer staple last year, the denim one is a more recent purchase, and both are second hand.

Three amazing tees for a chilly Saturday afternoon. Sadly, the last one is vintage, but the second can be found right here. Does anyone know where the first one is from?? I need its insane magical menagerie in my life!

Show off!

Basically, the sole purpose of this post is to gloat over the great things I found this weekend. Not that I have any business going shopping, especially this late in the month...

Unfortunately, whenever I get stressed, or sad, or worried, or all of the above (check, check and check), all I want to do is go thrift shopping! Everything about it calms me, even the smell of mothballs and stale cigarette smoke.

And even more unfortunately, since I moved to New York, "thrift shopping" has turned into "oh I'll just pop into Beacon's and see what's new..." Beacon's Closet is NOT a thrift store. Neither is Buffalo Exchange. Or Atlantis Attic. These are some facts over which I am firmly in denial.

Ah but to hell with it, look what I found! The most beautiful sheer pink blouse, and a little brownish skirt (hey, I NEEDED skirts), and an old pair of Hush Puppies heels. And there's more (just a LITTLE more I swear), that will be popping up in the future no doubt.

Anyways, in penance, I've been updating my etsy with some pretty choice goods. There was another lighter pink blouse like this one that I almost snapped up for the shop, though at the moment I'm trying not to consciously "spend money to make money," but perhaps I'll go back in a day or two and see if it's still there? I'm sure some lovely girl could find a place for it in her closet.

A few pages from the 1978 edition of the yearbook for my bf's alma mater. I found it in a thrift store a few blocks from my house, and gave it to him for Christmas. It's pure gold! Hopefully someday I'll get around to scanning more of it...

Victory is mine

I finally found a pair of Justin boots in my size! It's hard for me to really muster up any degree of excitement about winter shoes right now, but I'm pretty stoked on them, and I can't wait till I can wear them sans tights with dresses in the ~*spring*~.

Photobucket

Like this! Here they are with the beautiful dress I have for sale at the moment. I mean, so yeah, I may be a bit biased when it comes to things I'm trying to sell, but this one is a real peach, I'm telling you. It's another one of those if-it-fit-me-I-would-NEVER-let-it-go sadnesses.

Otherwise, I've basically been wearing a variation on the same exact outfit for the last couple of weeks. It's about this time of the year, every year, where I finally give up any hope of ever being able to dress stylishly and/or appropriately during the colder months and just throw in the towel.

OVER IT.

sunlandic

Today I lay down in the backyard for a good long while, trying to save up enough sunshine to last me through the long cold New York winter that I feel hovering on the horizon like a dark cloud of sadness (though to you actually in NYC at the moment, that eventuality may seem an awful long way off...). Then, I chopped the hem off this skirt I bought the other day (which I think could still stand to be a good deal shorter), and put on a tank top the same color as the record playing on my stereo. Now all that's left to decide is what shoes to wear. I'm leaning heavily towards none...

P.S. The fabulous folks over at Prim Magazine have published a short, extremely flattering feature on me and my blog in the current issue (which is all sorts of rad, besides). So go check it out!

let's thrift again (like we did last summer)

A couple of weeks ago, I saw this photo on The Facehunter:

I love absolutely everything about this outfit, but I fell especially hard for the shoes. I've been looking for a little old lady pair of t-strap sandal-y shoes for eons, so it was with a semi-silent whoop! of joy that I grabbed these off the Thrift Store shelf the other day:

Ok, so I'm pretty sure hers are still a tad cooler, but these babies make me feel like I'm walking on air so I'll let it slide. Hello arch support! From the same store, I've also picked up a pair of granny oxfords:

And some intimidating leather boots:

Finally, to round things out, a few pieces of flair that would make any grandmother proud:

The only thing missing from this picture is a tall, cool glass of Metamucil...and my retirement fund.

i'd rather be sunning

I wasn't exactly looking to do any shopping while I was in Montauk (although I was rather surprised to see that they had a Screaming Mimi's in town, and unsurprised to note that I still could not afford to buy so much as a hanky there). Nevertheless, I ended up coming across this bag at the local annual book sale in the White Elephant section:

I thought it was a pretty appropriate purchase (and all of $1!) considering the weekend's activities. It also says "© Bag Bazaar 1978" on the front. This kind of bag IS my bag (baby).

I fear I can no longer resist the clarion call of the 90's revival bandwagon. Though I think maybe this is one of those wagons you tend to fall off of, not onto...I'm still not down with scrunchies, but give it time, give it time.

P.S. shelby, does this answer your question? ;n )

13.5.08

fun finds

Huge skirt (with pockets!) I have yet to work my sewing magic upon. I just love the fabric so so much!

Funny little cotton jacket. I actually saw this at the store about six months ago, I kid you not, and it was still there so, obviously, it was meant to be...

Oh, and check out the color of my new walls, and baaaathe in all that sweet natural light!

Yaller

Everything's coming up in shades of gold and saffron these days, which is a good thing, since the weather is coming up mostly gray. First of all, the beautiful Sherbet Tone sent me a ruffly blouse that I can't wait to wear tucked into a kickass pair of denim shorts (get the hint, clouds?).

The next day I nearly peed myself (which, though decidedly inappropriate, would certainly have fitted nicely into the general color scheme) when I found this sunny little vest and scarf at a surprisingly fair-priced second hand store in the City. The prettiest little violas I bought at the Farmer's Market last week are blooming on our stoop, and finally, by the time I move into a new room next week (with a real window I CAN OPEN!), my walls will be a lovely shade of Citrus Zest. Quite rightly. (I know I know, I ALMOST held out on the "Mellow Yellow" references. Almost.)

Magic shoes

As the more astute amongst you may have noticed, I also picked up a new pair of shoes on Saturday! I have been looking for a pair of simple, brown, old fashioned t-strap shoes for, oh, I don't know, MY WHOLE LIFE, and they were half off to boot, rounding out at a smooth $8! They remind me of something that liebemarlene might wear, and that is a very, very good thing.

4.2.08

must be the coats

This coat is one of my favorite purchases I made during my vacation. I bought it at the Goodwill on Haight Street for $13.99, which is more than I usually like to pay for anything (unless it involves the words "surgery" and "emergency"), but it's not bad for such a lovely camel colored coat, with perfect rows of golden buttons, in almost mint condition. Especially on Haight Street!

New (old) sweater

A few rainy days ago I struck out on a rather foolhardy expeidition to a large thrift store in West Hempstead, a sister store of which I spent many blissful hours, and dollars, in during high school back in Washington State. It paled, nay, it sagged and sulked in comparison to its West Coast cousin, BUT, I did pick up this new warm cardigan, some odds and ends, and a few things for my room, including a hilarious pillow shaped like a little hamburger-dude. So all was not lost. And any rainy day spent on trains is an ok day by me.

Small Wonders

I'm in a bit of a financial crisis at the moment, even more so than usual, but of course that hasn't stopped me from thrifting. I braved resentful stares from old women today and ventured into Collector's Corner.

Blatantly fake Chanel bling. I have serious doubts that I will ever have the balls to wear this in public.

I have a lot of trouble with jewelry. Most of the time it just feels so showy and unnecessary, and I only really enjoy pieces that have some sort of sentimental value. But I can't say no to big ridiculous pendants. I tried on a chain that carried a two inch wide gold scallop shell today. I wanted to laugh out loud with joy but I was afraid the old ladies would eat me.
