ALL FERN EVERYTHING

 
Spent last weekend in a beautiful, magical, fern filled land catching fireflies, reading books, taking photos, cooking foods. Spent this week suffering from severe post-paradise depression.

DF x NETTIE KENT x THIS MOI

Back in February, I managed to stumble ass-backwards into what's turned out to be one heck of a pretty great part-time job. I'm spending three days a week as the Web Content Editor for Dear Fieldbinder, a boutique in Carroll Gardens here in Brooklyn. That means I write the copy for their online store, as well as contributing to their blog, Pinterest and Facebook--so if things get a little quiet around here, chances are I'm cooking up something over Dear Fieldbinder way.

On the particular afternoon pictured above, I played dress-up in a few summery pieces from the shop for a little shoot showcasing DF's recent collaboration with jewelry line Nettie Kent. It took a lot of patience and semi-awkward loitering to get that dang yellow cab in the background of the last shot, but we nailed it (Tommy Ton eat your heart out.)

PANTS, MAGIC PANTS

I call these trousers my Magic Pants, because twice in a row I have worn them to work at an event of some kind and shoved cash in the pockets, only to conjure from thin air the forgotten bills days or even weeks later. The shirt is old and silky-soft, and will probably start falling apart the fifth time I wear it. And the shoes! They are the shoes I have been looking for since ninth grade. They're the shoes I wish I had worn to my first high school dance. Soft suede, ankle straps, solid heel and a tiny little peek of a peep at the toe. I will wear them until the day they go all Silver Hornet on me. Sadly, they're second-hand and the name is completely rubbed off the inside, otherwise I would tell you and we could all devote ourselves to tracking them down in every single color ever made.

Best of all, I was lucky enough to wear this here outfit to the A Détacher Fall 2012 show at Pier 59 Studios on Sunday night. As happy as I was to have a standing ticket, I was pretty dang excited when I nabbed a front row seat once all us rabble were allowed to file in and fill in any empty spots. I felt a liiittle bit conspicuous snapping away with my clunky SLR whose shutter goes off like a demented robotic baby bird, but if I've gotten even one decent shot of the fiery red-orange tights in those taupe and tangerine wood soled platforms, it'll have been more than worth it. Thank you Caitlin once again for inviting me, you made my day and my (Fashion) week!

BOWS & BANDITS SUMMER LOOKBOOK

Back in May, I got to spend yet another beautiful day with my friend Eva from Bows & Bandits Vintage shooting another little look book for her site. Little did we know when we set out to the Brooklyn Botanic gardens that no less than 40,000 bluebells in full bloom were waiting for us. Bluebells almost as far as they eye could see! It was pretty incredible, and played right into my pastoral English countryside dreams. I really feel like I earned this weekend, and I plan on spending it lounging, reading, buying flowers and avoiding anything that even so much as resembles a garment bag. Hope you have a good great one!

I've just been invited last minute on a weekend adventure out of town, so it'll be a quiet one around here. Fortunately, in case you're jonesing for more ME (you are, admit it), I did a really fun little interview with the sweet girls from Brie et Char, so if you've always wondered what my favorite iTunes radio stations are (so croosh!) or just what the hell the name of my blog means anyways (hahaha it's kinda dumb!) have a look-see (and don't forget to check out the rest of their wonderful blog as well!) BOWS & BANDITS S/S11

I'm super duper excited to share a really fun project I had the good fortune to take part in recently. I've been a fan of Bows & Bandits Vintage for a good while now, so when Eva (one half of the B&B team) asked me to model for their Spring/Summer lookbook, I didn't even have to think twice. I'm definitely more comfortable behind the camera than in front, especially when someone else is in charge of snapping the shutter, but I knew as soon as I stepped in the door of Eva's beautiful apartment and was immediately plied with delicious pastries and a heap of the prettiest vintage dresses and skirts that I was in good hands.

Turns out my faith was rewarded many times over. Eva's friend Kathi Reckendorfer took all the photos using not one, not two, but three different film cameras (a girl after my own heart if ever there was one!) I'll be the first to admit that I'm my own harshest critic, but Kathi has such an amazing eye and the girls made me feel so comfortable that the results, more of which you can see on Kathi's website, made me feel really, unabashedly great. Kathi, if you're ever looking for work as a personal photographer, you've got my email ;n )

LAURA ASHLEY FELT HAT

It is SO DAMNED HARD for me to find hats that fit. They are almost always too big or too, I don't know...deep? Or something, something that causes me to look like a child playing dress up in them. Or causes my vision to be fully obstructed while wearing them. Or both.

So when I tried on this Laura Ashley(!) felt number while I was staying at my best friend's place back home in January, well, what could I do but beg, whine and cajole her into giving it to me? (For the record, I didn't have to try that hard.) I couldn't carry it back to NYC with me, so she shipped it some weeks later. To be honest, I haven't had the guts, or the occasion, to wear it out yet. But I do love it! Also, I feel like I don't show my face so much around here anymore--which I am quite fine with! But just in case you were wondering, hi, hello, this is my face right now. In my awesome new hat.

fancy footwork

Ok: it's no secret I love shoes. I also LOVE to dance, although sadly it is something I don't do nearly enough of these days (maybe I should start going "clubbin'"? Do people still do that??) So when Elizabeth rang me up a few weeks ago, offering me a rad pair of Aldo shoes in exchange for shakin' it on camera one morning with several amazing young ladies, it was kind of a no-brainer. It was a bit on the early side for a dance party (many a grande americano had to be wrangled from hand before we rolled...) but it was really great to finally meet so many faces theretofore familiar only as an extension of my laptop.

But what does it all meeean, Basil? Long story short, ALDO is hosting a pretty rad contest right now, involving--you guessed it--shoes, dancing, AND no less than $2500 in prize money. Think of the video above as a kind of jumping off point for you and your killer moves. I mean, come on, you can do better than us right???

Last week, I had the immense pleasure of meeting up with photographer Charlie Rubin. We went for a walk around my neighborhood, and he snapped some photos of me being a goof and wearing a pair of flaming pink linen Ralph Lauren pants. I only wish I had found those pants back in May. It would have been one of those summers, haha, you know: the kind that takes you wherever the hot pink pants lead you...

BUST=best

I've been hearing rumblings that the August/September issue of BUST has been officially unleashed on the world, so I think it's safe for me to finally unveil something I've been excited about for many weeks now.

Back in June, I was invited, along with Elizabeth, Jenny and Angel, to be one of four amazing, blogging ladies to be featured in a special Fall fashion preview. When Lisa, one of the editors, suggested we wear a favorite local or indie designer of ours, I immediately thought of my friend Caycee Black and her sweet, eponymous line. I ended up wearing one of her gorgeous heavy knit sweaters, along with some odds and ends from my closet. We were also asked to make up a little wishlist for fall--sadly, my crappy scan totally obliterated the American Apparel sweater down in the corner, but that means you'll just have to check it out for yourself in print!

Endless thanks goes out to Lisa (who has an amazing blog of her own) and everyone else at BUST for being so amazing and sweet and badass! And for treating me so dang good, seriously, whatever I did to deserve this, it must have been pretty awesome...

Mickey Mouse Club

Eep! Maya's post with photos of our hang time this weekend just went up over on Turned Out, and I love it! It's kinda sweet that she left in all my messy scribbling (though at the time she assured me she's chop it out, sneak haha!) Honestly, this is exactly the ego boost I needed right now, as I'm about to head off to a photo shoot where I'm gonna be in front of the camera, instead of scurrying around on the sidelines. Wish me luck?

Who's that Spartan in my tee-pee?

Ah, it seems like just yesterday that I ran into Eddie wending my way through the 'burg (it was a bit of an awkward ballet in retrospect--I wasn't wearing my glasses, he was gesticulating animatedly in my general direction...I crossed the street...) Actually, to be fair, it was several weeks ago (hey, these things take time), you can tell because I look way too jazzed on life in the outdoors for this to be recent heheh.

Thanks for making me look so rad, Mr. Newton, and thanks Refinery29 for shooting me down the ol' pipeline!
