Thank you all SO MUCH for the kind comments on my last entry!! You made me :n )
I've just been invited last minute on a weekend adventure out of town, so it'll be a quiet one around here. Fortunately, in case you're jonesing for more ME (you are, admit it), I did a really fun little interview with the sweet girls from Brie et Char, so if you've always wondered what my favorite iTunes radio stations are (so croosh!) or just what the hell the name of my blog means anyways (hahaha it's kinda dumb!) have a look-see (and don't forget to check out the rest of their wonderful blog as well!) And duh, have a great weekend!
Seeing as how I'm a fan of blogs that successfully mix food and fashion, I want to try and start sharing a bit about my own eating adventures. My bf and I both love food and treats and trying new stuff, so I've got ample fodder (literally!)
'Couple weeks back, we spent the afternoon in Prospect Park, but not before stopping at Naidre's for what I have officially deemed the Best BLT I've Ever Eaten, no small feat since the classic BLT may be my very favorite sandwich. And I LOVE sandwiches, of all kinds. I think the secret is in their herb mayo...and the bread...and how fresh it all is. So gooood!
Last week we stopped by The Meatball Shop. I ended up getting the veggie balls in meat sauce (thought I'd split the difference?) and while I wasn't crazy about my balls (mostly just lentils) Alex's sliders were delicious! My fave was the special of the day, lamb with feta, olives and peppers (I think) all in a ball.
The most delicious part, though, was their mix 'n match ice cream sandwich option. You choose from an ample list of homemade cookies and ice creams, and they sandwich it up for you on the spot. We went for ginger cookies (which were possibly the best ginger cookies I've ever had, a bit chewy with little chunks of candied ginger in them) and the special, mandarin ice cream. Creamy AND dreamy.
I try, as a rule, to keep the more boring/tedious parts of my life off this blog (I save those for passive-aggressive facebook updates!) Today, however, I'm coming to you with a plea for help. Friends, countrymen, here's the bottom line: I need a job! A paying job, in New York City, to be exact.
Now, I know I'm not alone in this predicament, these days especially. Which is why I feel a bit funny asking for your help, it seems a bit presumptuous and strange I guess. But things have been kind of rough around here lately, and I have to admit, I could sure use a hand (or two or three!)
The majority of my experience up to this point has been in the fashion/magazine biz, including stints with Havanna Laffitte, BUST and FADER, but I also have several years of retail, food service and library experience to boot (edit: oooh and there's that BA in Film Studies I just finished, almost forgot!!)
If you know of anything that a writer/blogger/vintage shoe enthusiast such as myself might be able to do around here to earn some bread and butter, if you know of anyone I might get in touch with, or even if you only have a word or two of advice, I would be endlessly grateful if you could email me at the email on my profile or sirithorson@gmail.com.
Aaaaahhh, so I'm about to go completely cross-eyed from using the spot healing tool on Photoshop (you get what you pay for when you trust York Photo Labs with your biz...), but nonetheless, here's the first round of my photos from my time in Japan with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart! Many more to come!
You can click them to make 'em larger, and/or view them on my flickr as well. I'll add captions along the way :n )
Waking up in our hotel the first morning in Tokyo. The best feeling ever!
A store full of cat stuff that I still regret not going in to, near Gotanda Station in Tokyo.
The view from Gotanda Station. This was right after me and Alex's first trip to a real grocery store (i.e. not a 7-11) in Japan and we were so proud that we'd figured out how to buy breakfast! Actually, I never stopped being proud after managing to feed myself in Japan. Small victories.
The Pains' first show at Fever in Tokyo. They played there again on the last night of our stay in Japan.
Bicycles in Osaka. A few blocks away, we found a pet store that sold tiny monkeys in the back, and later we accidentally ate at a Chinese restaurant, because they were the only place with pictures on the menu!
Watching the Superbowl...live...but the next morning...in a hotel room in Osaka???
On our way to the top of the train station in Kyoto, where we ate in a restaurant that was decorated with slug-like plastic icebergs lit from within.
Part of Kiyomizu Temple, which is in the hills above Kyoto.
The view from Kiyomizu Temple. You can't really tell, but there were some pretty sweet Jesus rays goin' on.
A wall of cats in another cat-ephemera store. Now I know that when I get old, all I have to do is move to Japan and open up one of these babies. Neko seiko!!
Those Hope and Peace cigarettes again, never gets old!
We started up a tally of all the cities that had some sort of "fake Space Needle" going on downtown. This is Kyoto's bid. Also on the list: Sydney and Auckland.
Pretty flowers for sale on the walk to the train station in Kakogawa. It was so warm and sunny that morning, and we ate hotdogs baked into tiny baguettes for breakfast.
"Portrait of the Artist as an Old Naked Saxophone Player"
Dusk in Kobe, on our way to eat Kobe burgers!
Alex and Kip onstage at the show that night at Kobe Blueport.
Sweet, Japan-exclusive Pains shirts! I made Alex nab me a blue and white one, now I wish I'd gotten lavender...
Naoki!!! Oh Naoki. The owner of Fastcut Records, who put out the Pains record in Japan. Also: our babysitter for ten days, he went everywhere we went, even the world's saddest zoo. Bless. This. Man.
The walls of the greenroom at Kobe Blueport were covered in some serious wtf band name graffitti. Some of my favorites included Mislead Balds, Fuck You Heroes and Sweef. I thought we should join the party, I mean honestly, does "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart" not kinda sound like the best wtf Japanese band name ever??
Saturday afternoon, post Opening Ceremony sample sale, I was feeling a little bit woozy. I swear every time the (freezing) wind blew I could hear it rustling down the canyons of my empty wallet. So by the time we passed the magazine shop on 14th which I knew carried Apartamento, I had pretty much given up any hope of actually owning the little bugger.
This story has a happy ending only because I happen to have the best bf in the world who didn't even think twice about marching into the store, throwing down some plastic, and plopping the magazine in my cold little hands.
So now, thanks to my favorite dude, we can all be just a little bit more envious of Ms. Sevigny's impeccable taste, not to mention her shoe collection. And do take the time to read the article--it's worth it for the gardening tips alone.
I don't quite know how to feel about this...I remember the first rumors of this project's existence circulating many moons ago, back when I was a lonely freshman in college and an avid Yankee Racer. At the time, both The Life Aquatic and The Darjeeling Limited were looming on the more immediate horizon, and I had sort of stored this one away in the back corner of my mind.
The trailer makes it look maybe a little too "hip" and wacky for my liking, but after all trailers are meant to sell movies to as broad an audience as possible. In any case, I will undoubtedly be seeing this. But then I'm one of those crazy fools who believes that any man who brought us Rushmore can do no real wrong.
Better late than never, right? This is what I wore out on my birthday for Indian food and soft-serve in the rain.
I actually found this dress at Buffalo Exchange during the day on my birthday, and treated myself. It has the sweetest little flower print, which can be seen here on the far left.
In the days between then and now, it has grown progressively hotter, reminding me that I still need shorts and tank tops and all those things that leave as many of my 2000 parts free and exposed to the world. I require ventilation! Also, I got the most amazing package in the mail yesterday:
It's a wonderful feeling knowing that someone out there truly understands just exactly what you love in this world, right down to remembering the weird ceramic bud vase from some tiny store back home you were totally obsessed with last summer. Amazing. Also, the girl hand bleach-painted that skull t-shirt herself. I keep telling her she needs to go into business selling those things! So. Bad. Ass.
I feel like she should be about to break into the "Top That" rap from Teen Witch. Cuz, you know, you can give all that you can, but you will never top that/you can dream until you're blue but you can never TOP THAT!
Well, not just somebody, Hannah! I don't think I could say "thank you" enough if I ran upstairs and literally shouted it from the rooftops!
Haha, and now I think I'm addicted to Frankie--and not just because they said good things about the Pains (though that suuure doesn't hurt none!) I mean seriously, do you guys publish any non-amazing magazines? I defy you to show me your worst, trashiest rag, and watch as it still manages to blow its pasty American counterpart out of the water. I bet even Marie Claire Australia, be there such a thing, is at least readable!
