TWENTY ELEVEN

Picture 123
(click photo for details)

Just another imaginary outfit, this time for New Years. Christmas has left me feeling so completely burnt out that all this week I've been constantly forgetting we've yet another damn holiday left to celebrate. I don't have a gorgeous Giambattista Valli number to step out in, but I did find a really pretty vintage dress in a sort of salmon pink that I'm awfully excited to wear. It was heavily discounted because of a few moth holes and a missing button, but predictably these conditions only make me love it that much more. I promise to convince someone with a decent camera to snap a photo before the Champagne kicks in.

mystery solved

Ok, so my weekend?? Bizarro world. Friends, I could not make this shit up if I tried. Long story short, I found out last week that the amazing people at streetwear brand 55DSL wanted to fly me to Italy to cover their Galactic Foosball Finals for FADER. Knowing little more than what I've told you in that sentence, I said HELLS YES. A few days later, I was in Bassano del Grappa at the foot of the Italian Alps, snapping photos of giddy, grappa-soaked dudes facing off over red and blue plastic foosmen (an actual term, I looked it up! Research!!)

Even though I only spent a total of about 36 hours over there (and almost that much in the air, I swear to gawd), it was an incredible time filled with insanely kind people, the best pizza I've ever had in my life, nutella gelato, poorly dubbed classic American films starring Frank Sinatra, a jacuzzi tub, $17 sunscreen and very, very little sleep.

You can check out my post over on the FADER blog for a few more photos/details from the weirdest weekend of my adult life. I'd also like to throw in a GINORMOUS thank you to 55DSL for showing this scrappy little lady such a wonderful, welcoming time. Let's do this again real soon, ok????

Thanks, Noah, for the amazing YouTube Karaoke Party (and these photos!), and sorry about the confetti--it was the smallest bag they had I swear!! I think I drank most of it by the end of the night anyways... karma's a bitch eheh.

it's the final countdown

hannevogueitalia

This is essentially how I'm imagining my (and perhaps your??) night ending, somewhere in the wee hours of the morning. Only I'll be wearing a lot more black and a lot more sparkles and some bright red lipstick.

See you all on the other side!!

party time

Only thing missing? A ginormous package of Twizzlers, most of which I ate that night (I couldn't find any red rope licorice, and apparently they don't have Red Vines on the East Coast--can this be true??) After seeing the Crystal Stilts play somewhere out in the boonies, our evening culminated in a fuzzy trip down the McDonald's dollar menu. I guess some crullers from Mikita's would have been more authentic, but who's counting?

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? So what can I say except...gosh, thanks Alexa! You're makin' me blush!!

my brush with Fashion

lewislook1

Wednesday afternoon, I attended the Lewis Spring 2010 Presentation. I totally failed at trying to find something new to wear, so I decided to just fall back on old standards. I bought this dress last year to attend the BUST anniversary party, and I've had this ancient Louis Vuitton doctors bag since I scored it in high school. Somehow it usually just feels too silly and ostentatious to wear out, but I figured if there's anywhere I could tote it around and not feel like a douche, it would be a fashion party right??

lewislook3

The show was held upstairs at a really pretty restaurant called 5Ninth. The clothes were gorgeous--all patterned silks in greens, blues and pinks. I spied Mary Kate Steinmiller from Teen Vogue, and of course, Ms. Lewis herself was an absolute doll. She introduced me to a girl who is good friends with Christopher from Girls, and we totally hit it off, which was a relief cuz I was kinda nervous! I'm bad enough at going to parties when I'm surrounded by friends, but this time I was flying solo...oh and the free champagne helped too.

...And this is how I actually looked for most of the party. I took a bunch of photos with my Canon, and even though it was dim and I don't have a flash, quite a few came out! I'll scan them and put them up tonight or tomorrow.

So I go away for a couple weeks to some distant island paradise, and what sort of a stunt do my housemates pull in retribution??

Photographic evidence of my 30 second shotgun engagement to my pal Steve, or an innocent case of platonic wristband application? You make the call.

hooray new things!

Tuesday night, I went to this totally amazing party. Since I had just gotten back from the West Coast, meaning many of my clothes are still in the mail (those that I couldn't shove into my painfully undersized suitcase, and that, clearly, meaning MANY), and since I was feelin' deceptively flush, I went to Beacon's Closet that afternoon with the notion of just, straight up, purchasing something. No trading, no dilly dallying and putting things on hold and then forgetting about them: no. If I found a dress and shoes that fit, I was prepared to throw down the Wamu Gold right then and there.

So, with this new found freedom coursing through my veins, I obviously expected to find zip, zilch. That would just be toooo easy, right? Well ha! For once, I won. I found this pretty little dress (actually, it was once considerably less little, and being sans sewing machine, I was forced to just hack it off a few minutes before rushing out the door... just don't look too closely) and,

these shoes which, yes, tore my feet to all hell within the first 15 minutes of stumbling around between the subway and the South Street Sea Port. I'm sorry I don't have a picture of me wearing all this. So maybe I was too busy getting down to some serious talk of Gem Sweaters. So sue me.

get down girl

Has it been nearly a week? Really? Ah jeez. I'd like to say I've just been slaving away over the ol' text books, which is true...ish. But honesty, I've also been doing a fair amount of this:

Additionally, much of my free time and energy have been going into preparing for something rather glorious--4th of July long weekend spent at a house in Montauk! Floppy hat? Check. Espadrille wedges? Check. I might even eat lobster for the first time! Ah, East Coast livin'...

(Hey, Ben, what say you quit that silly EMT training and just become my full-time personal photographer, k?)

his hang-ups are hilarious!

Of all the wonderful things I received for my birthday this year, the best by far has got to be this: a limited edition copy of the never-before-released Soundtrack to Harold and Maude. For a Seventies film junkie like me, this is something of a holy grail my friends. Oooh I am only just beginning to nerd out over this! And on top of it all, I was also gifted a record player to play it on! I'm so excited to be able to go record shopping once more without the added guilt of not actually being able to listen to them. Best best best!

Society Gals won't you come out tonight?

As some of you may remember, several weeks ago the illustrious Beth Jones, the über-stylish force behind The Vintage Society, invited me to take part in this awesome project. Well, the project has now come to full fruition, and Beth is celebrating the launch of her new website today, Saturday the 21st, with a party at SiteLA. I wish upon wish I could attend, but as I am stuck on the other side of the country, it's up to you, my friends, to live the dream for me. Check out her blog for the deets, as well as photos of myself and several other amazing ladies from around the globe in our Quiksilver stripey shirt!

weekend update

My best friend from back home came to visit us last week. Dagmar is the coolest girl alive, and adventure has been in high supply: Corona chugging, fireworks over the Brooklyn Bridge, shady thrift stores, snacking on street produce, Indian food, Icelandic chocolate, moving sales, roof-wrasslin', Fleet Week!, dog packs, cherry pie, Found videos, Rock Rock Rockaway Beach, and copious napping. I wish she could stay with us forever!

I am a Fever

Monday night I went out! This was kind of a big deal for me, because, outside of school/work/bare necessities, I really don't leave my house all that often (except to go shoe shopping, but that clearly falls under the bare necessities category). However, lured by the promise of an open bar and an art installation provided by none other than K-Y Jelly (?! maybe it's just the 4th grade boy in me), I proceed forth into the night.

Of course, the new shoes were there for support, as well as my last-minute-improvised sparkly headband. Later on, this would inspire one especially animated young dude to holler "Arden Wohl!" and gesture wildly at my head. Hey man, she didn't invent the damn things! Anyways, Nylon was kind enough to snap a photo for me:

We got elbowed out of our sweet balcony spot by Dani Stahl, the Kills played a killer (ha!) set, we scooped up as much free lube as the eye could see, and headed for the hills.

Holiday madness

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S CHRISTMAS IN FOUR DAYS??? I can't. I cannot.

The last few days have been filled with so many friends, I've actually been leaving my little hovel off the N-line and seeing movies and eating tasty things and cooking pasta in OTHER PEOPLE'S APARTMENTS (I know, I'm such a wild child!) Consequently, my blog has suffered. Apologies all around. I'm still here, honest, I'm just in hibernation, like a really ridiculously good-looking bear. And until I actually get it together to do something creative myself, I will continue to whole-heartedly steal photos from my friends, like the one above (thanks Rachel!)
