pretty tough to think about

White Blood Cells was easily one of the most important albums of my mid-teen years (along with the soundtrack to The Royal Tenenbaums and Queen's Greatest Hits...) The White Stripes also hapen to be possibly the most Christmas-appropriate band ever, in terms of color scheme anyways.

My point is: rock out guys, it's the beginning of December!!

"Woodstock" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is one of those actually really great but also helplessly cheesy classic rock songs that I always have to turn right up whenever I hear it on the radio. I just like the chorus anyways, you know "we are staaaardust, we are gooooldeeen..."

Anyways, this weeks been pretty stellar so far.

I'm melting

Artistic representation of the only sensible way to deal with summer in New York City sans air conditioning:

Step 1) gather all your most attractive friends.
Step 2) gather and arrange all your most powerful fans.
Step 3) lie down on the floor and do not move.

Bags of various frozen vegetables recommended but not required, depending on your budget.

There ain't no words...

...for the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my...

I've gotten a few questions about my hair lately, and I thought I'd make a little post to address the inquiries properly! I wish I had some juicy secrets to share with you, but sadly, the only special treatment I lend my locks is that I never, ever blow dry it. It can be a sort of a bitch having to plan showers to allow ample time for air drying, but it really is worth it. Heat is a hair killer!

Also, I do color my hair (and it's getting to be dyin' time again as you can see from the above photo!) My hair is naturally the sort of mousy blondish brown that looks good on pretty much no one, so I give it a kick in the pants with Herbal Essences Bold 'n Brilliant Color in #54 Amber Shimmer. However, it fades pretty fast, so the color that you generally see on my head is not what comes directly out of the box, but a slightly washed out, sun-bleached version.

Other than that, my bath products are kind of a crap shoot. I'm most likely to go for whatever shampoo is on sale and splurge on a slightly nicer conditioner. Right now I'm using this Pantene Nature Fusion stuff which I've been quite pleased with. I don't really use any product, though I used to be obsessed with that John Frieda Ocean Waves spray, until they discontinued it (hence the WTF pricetag!) And I do indeed cut my own hair and bangs, but all that jazz will have to wait for a proper video tutorial...

And just for fun:

A photo from several years ago when I had a really crap rendition of the Jane Fonda shag. It got soooooo much more mullet-y than this before I was finished...

Bits & pieces, odds & ends

Spilledmilk1_1

• I'm featured on page 28 of this fantastic new online magazine called Spilled Milk (along with a whole slew of amazing girls, expect many familiar faces!)

• The winner of the ChickDowntown contest was a little lady named Cynthia, whose BB Dakota dress should be in the mail. Thanks so much to everyone who participated, and I'm absolutely serious about hosting a contest of my own in the future that's open to everyone worldwide. Stay tuned!

Valentine is still very pretty. And cool. And French. So we can all relax.

That is all.

Magic Hour

I think getting out of class early is one of the few things I'll miss about school.

Yesterday, I managed to make it home just before the sun started going down.

That's one of my favorite things about this time of year, we finally get more light! Though the more I think about it, the more daylight savings time is still a totally bizarre concept to me. What a completely artificial construct! Anyways.

My room faces west and a bit south, and I get the most glorious afternoon sunlight. Having yellow walls helps up the golden factor as well. Haha, and in this photo you can see my "kitty corner", a testament to how badly I wish I could have a cat...Also, yes there is a door behind my bed, one of three that lead into my room. Weirdest apartment, ever.

6 (Un)important Things

A while ago, I was tagged by Left Hand Endeavor to make out a little list of little things that make me happy. Finally, in an especially depressing English II session yesterday I got down to writing it out. Here goes!

6 (Un)important things that make me happy (though I think their lack of importance is highly debatable!)

1) Wearing my boyfriend's clothes

His t-shirts are soft and well-worn, his sweaters are big and cozy and some are even cashmere! Since I can't actually come hang out under his desk all day at work (though there is plenty of room down there, I checked), this is essentially the next best thing. The shirt I'm wearing above used to be his.

2) Thinking about what people are doing in the beautiful, far away places I have visited

Yesterday I almost missed my stop on the train because I was daydreaming about life in Riomaggiore. How deep is the snow in Gimmelwald, high up in the Berner Oberland? Is anyone staying at the hostel? What about the farmers and their cows who live on the slopes above, or the little orange cat we met in front of an old hayloft? Bacharach, Röthenburg, Vernazza, Füssen, Stechelberg: I spent only a few days in these towns but I miss them and think about them often. I wish I could be in a million places at once!

3) Flowers

In my mind, there is nothing better to give or to receive than flowers. Growing up on Thousand Flower Farm, I used to help harvest and bundle them for market: dahlias, lilies, foxgloves, zinnias, delphiniums, sweet william, carnations, zulu daisies, crocosmia, cosmos and on and on. I wish I could afford to fill my apartment with cabbage roses and tuberose all the year round, but instead here in the city I am mostly limited to sidewalk stands and an occasional farmer's market splurge. Even so, nothing brightens my day like a $5.00 bunch of spray roses, yellow if it's snowing and pink in the summertime.

4) Smelling things

I love going into places that sell perfumes or lotions or potions or even shampoos and conditioner, and taking my time to investigate their various scents. Places like Fresh and Sephora are especially good for this, one of my many lifelong fall-back free activities, but pretty much any old grocery store or Rite Aid will do. I think this also ties partly into my constant search for a perfume that I like, one that can become my "signature" (that sounds so dumb, but I really want one!). I think most perfumes smell awful and fake and pants-suity. But I still get a kick out of smelling them!

5) Seeing old movies at Film Forum

It's been too long since I did this one! I love how small and personal the theatre feels. I love that almost everyone who goes there seems to genuinely love films and talking about them and thinking about them and being moved by them. And standing in line doesn't bother me because it's the best for classy people watching. I once saw the most amazing couple there, they looked like they stepped right out of a masterful collaboration between Jean-Luc Godard and Wes Anderson. They were both so pretty and nervous, and excited to see "Pierrot le Fou". During the film I sat next to an elderly gentleman who kept apologetically blowing his nose at all the worst times. And it was still great, and I can't wait to do it again.

6) Last but not Least:

This cat's tiny wee face.

antici......pation

You know, it's not fall I have a problem with at all. I forgot, fall is great, if only because I can wear cardigans again (reason enough for great rejoicing in my book). I guess I just resent fall for being such a pussy and letting winter roar in and kick its ass. Pathetic.

Anways, here are some things I'm looking forward to wearing this fall:

My bathrobe coat. Alas, the fur collar is turning to dust. I'll need to find a replacement ASAP. Also, beautiful emerald green leather gloves. Leather gloves are creepy, but emerald green gloves are magic, so I feel like at very least they cancel each other out.

Crazy gypsy dress. I'm going to have to be careful, as this could have me looking like a Renaissance Faire Reject before you can say "...tramps and thieves."

Another new piece from Quiksilver, and an amazing cardigan (woooh!), even warmer and more comforting than a golden shower. Ah, plaid jokes, pee, jokes--I'm really on a roll these days!

Top Model reject

Friday afternoon, my housemate and I took Brooklyn's DUMBO district by storm, tromping around in short shorts, scaring small dogs and changing in bushes. We were working on her final project for a photo class she's taking at FIT, and since the finished product will be in black & white, we decided to take some color Polaroids for good measure. Anyways, now that most residents of DUMBO have seen my ass (naked, nearly naked, or otherwise), I guess it's time to move on. Look for my butt coming to a borough near you!

Sometimes...

I like to torture myself by making afternoon outings to discount stores and trying on beautiful clothing that, despite being heftily reduced, I still cannot afford! Somehow, I always seem to think that this will cheer me up...

Ha! Think again! This little number was by some brand called Chelsea Flower, and was in fact a bit too tent-like. But I loved the color.

I can, however, afford many things in the legwear section, so I came home with a bounty of socks and tights. I also broke down and bought a tiny wee bottle of Marc Jacobs perfume from eBay last week, and a kind friend sent me an amazing Valentine (it's NEVER too late!) so all in all, I suppose I can't complain (but I will, oh WILL I!)
