blown to pieces

I just re-watched a great movie I first saw back at UCSC: Smithereens, directed by Susan Seidelman (of Desperately Seeking Susan fame.) One of my professors at BC, who moved to New York in the late '70's, told me it made her nostalgic for the old, grimey New York of the '80's, so you know it's the real deal!

It's chock full of music by the Feelies, co-stars a golden Richard Hell, and there's even the blink-and-you'll-miss-it debut of a Mr. Chris Noth--as a male prostitute no less.

Oh heck yes! Besides Smithereens:

Spirit of the Beehive
Claire's Knee
The Conformist
The Marriage of Maria Braun
Chinese Roulette
Songs from the Second Floor
Sweetie
Cleo from 5 to 7
Short Cuts
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Jeez ok I could go on, but that ought to get you started!

Thank you, Siri, this is such a great list! A few I've seen, loved, and forgotten, nearly half are on netflix instant view, and the rest sound sooo good, like Chinese Roulette which I've never even heard of!

You're welcome! And there's plenty more where that came from. I should just make a general list of "movies people should see" and keep it somewhere public. Probably the most use I'll ever get out of my film degree.

I love Smithereens, the opening sequence is totally brilliant. I love the way she stomps around the city, she's so angsty. That entire list is amazing...

I absolutely loved this movie!!!
I cam across this in happenstance and quickly became a favorite. Its also a little weird to know that it depicted the New York of the 80's really well yet looks so current too.(I mean tell me her crush doesn't look like he could be in the strokes?
