INTO THE ALGARVE SUN

Algarve

Algarve

Algarve

Algarve

Algarve

Right after my last post, I came across this spread over on Youthquakers. Taken by Norman Parkinson for UK Vogue January 1973, these photos pretty much encapsulate everything I'm aching for at the moment. While they were shot in Algarve, Portugal, which is actually bordered on two sides by the Atlantic Ocean, the colors, the sun, the sand--they all feed into my current (and ok, long-standing) obsession with visiting the Mediterranean.

The closest I've gotten was during a visit to the Cinque Terre too many years ago now (which, technically, is on the Ligurian Sea anyways! Bah!) More recently, this obsession has been fueled a) by Summer Lovers, aka the most atrocious movie you absolutely HAVE to see and b) by discovering Filicudi Island thanks to the newest issue of Apartamento. Algarve, Filicudi, Vernazza...it doesn't matter so much, as long as I can bring along my cutoffs.

this is making me long for summer, and I've been to the Cinque Terre too, also years ago! it's definitely one of the most beautiful places I've ever been

Dude, I can say with great confidence that the Algarve is pretty amazing. My parents have a little house there, right by the beach. I love it. It's not touristy at all, either. Dang. I wish I were there right now.

Ah man, that represents all I want right now! Also, don't you think the first photo looks a bit like a painting (the colours, the tall figure in black with a bright background)? (Or maybe it looks more like something I could try to paint while on my dream vacation to Algarve hehe!)

Aaah Emily, I'm so glad you've seen Summer Lovers and that you love it as much as I do! I have to say, the first time I watched it I was expecting it to be pretty atrocious, and it actually has its totally great moments, right? I also find myself just focusing on all the beautiful interiors and colors and the hilarious/amazing outfits--and it doesn't hurt that Daryl Hannah is a total babe (plus I inevitably find myself becoming entranced by Peter Gallagher's eyebrows...)

Algarve has changed a lot since the 70's. But you can still find there some places like that...and others too... ;) Well, I'm Portuguese and I love it as I love also Alentejo's coast.
