Pomegranate Season
It's always a sorry day when the last of the fresh berries disappear from the Farmer's Market. As a life-long devotee to both oatmeal and yogurt as year-round breakfast foods of choice, the winter time tends to leave my cereals and live cultures a bit less than, er, lively--and granola only gets you so far!
Thankfully, it's around this time of year that pomegranates descend onto supermarket shelves. I've been in love with the wondrous fruit since I was a kid (I always got one in my stocking, though sometimes it was a challenge to shake it out of there!) They are a bit time consuming to take apart, but I find it kinda meditative, standing barefoot in the kitchen in my boyfriend's sweater, slowly separating fruit from pith. Once removed, the ruby red seeds last several days in the fridge. I like to sprinkle a handful over hot six grain porridge, slice up some banana, and add a splash of oat milk and orange blossom honey. Such a perfect, simple winter breakfast.

I was just getting so bored with my morning oatmeal, this may be just what I need. And they are such pretty little things aren't they?

wow sounds delish. i love pomegranate seeds in yogurt!
mmm, I have a bowl of pomegranate seeds sitting in my fridge at home now too!
Here's another winter berry trick - ever tried freezing market blueberries from the summer and putting a few at the bottom of your oatmeal bowl in the winter? that's my mum's trick (with saskatoonberries!) and it works like a charm - once all the hot oatmeal+brown sugar/cinnamon/honey is in the bowl the berries will have defrosted. soooo good.
Remember when I came back from that wedding in Santa Clara, CA with a BAG of pomegranates. Wish I could grow them here.
I bought myself a big bad of rolled outs last week and have quickly come to realize that making oatmeal in the morning is like giving your stomach a really great hug!

HOW DELICIOUS IS THAT! Love the photos on your blog!
Ooh, that's a yummy looking bowl of goodness! I am a fan of organic muesli, natural yoghurt and a big old squirt of honey for breakfast. Berries too, if I've been organised on the grocery front. Just found your blog, likes it! : )

looks so YUMMY!
my favorite fruit!
mmmmm delicious! i love pomegranates. my best friend taught me a trick to getting the seeds out - he cuts the pomegranate in half and soaks the halves in ice water for a little while (10 minutes-20 minutes? i never time it, i just walk away and do something else for a bit). then after they have soaked in the ice water you can pull them out more easily. i do it in the water and then strain them.
