I always enter into Halloween season with the best of intentions, I do. But every year, my costume plans always seem to loose steam in the face of my inescapable aversion to spending money on things I'm going to use/wear only once. More often than not, this leaves me having to source nearly my entire outfit from my own closet--but there's only so many times one can go as a "Seventies Disco Queen" or "Spooky 60's Babydoll" before people start calling foul...

Honestly, I had pretty much given up all hope of coming up with anything even vaguely impressive this year (especially since I'm pretty sure I totally peaked last year...nowhere to go but down, right?) That is, until I came across this photo on Refinery29 and realized that--yes!--75% of what I needed to totally rip the girl on the left off was already in my closet! It's fitting because I feel like my whole life I have sort of been haunted by those creepy Pierrot dolls with the porcelain faces and soft bodies you find at thrift stores and on your best friend's Mom's mantle piece.

Anyways, I feel this post is totally begging the question: what are you gonna be for Halloween??

I feel the exact same way... I hate spending money on something I'll only use once. I'm also not the kind to buy one of those pre-packaged slutty costumes and call it a day...

I'm thinking about piecing mine from my own closet last-minute. I have buffalo flannel, long black maxis, and lace-up black combat boots, so I'm probably going grunge...

But if I do my make-up right and add fake blood, it becomes ZOMBIE GRUNGE and that's even better...

so yeah, that's what I'm doing. No worries because I feel your Halloween pain

incredibly cliche, but holly golightly
in my defense i already owned everything i needed, so no spending money on anything to be worn once again this year!
although i think my last year costume is pretty un-toppable too...

the pierrot costume will be a success, i promise. i was a pierrot clown two years ago and my friends still talk about how good it was. this year, i'm going to be a pilgrim. I'm so excited about my little dress that i added a collar and cuffs too. i might not remove them after halloween!

I actually thought about going as one of these guys. I thought you know some quick face paint and this hat I got off of ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=400014624776) would take care of the rest. I always have a half way there costume as well. I'm so glad I have blogs to look at though and these refinery photo help a bit!

ha! same here! My idea this year actually was a creepy 60's doll (any excuse for me to dress 60's like I usually do! Love all of these pictures and that would be a brilliant costume! I agree with not spending much for one day. The only thing I bought for it is reuseable fake eyelashes! So I don't feel bad about it at all :D

i'm in the exact same boat as you! i recently bought a black velvet 60's dress with a high ruffle collar and ruffles at the cuffs of the long sleeves. it just so happens to look very costumey and i fully intended to do the same as you: pierrot face paint! but i will probably only get as far as the dress because i'm terrible at halloween, i tell you!

i hear ya. i always just end up making something with what i have. i basically just wore my pyjamas to a party last night and said i was wendy from peter pan. it was surprisingly successful, to be honest!

I totally had one of those dolls as a music box that played "send in the clowns" as a kid. Seems kind of creepy and weird now. But I guess our perceptions change, I mean I had pet rat as a kid too. Ewww. Anyway, love the costume I idea...

Xx.

Oh yeah, this year I will be a boring Native American princess. My last year was so much better too...I am into group costumes.

How funny! My mom actually dressed me like this when I was about 8 (and my sister years before, same outfit) and I swear my Pierrot tear was a real sadness tear, haha!
Love A's costume!
