R.I.P. my littlest frenemy

Well guys, I've finally done it. After two, violent, tempestuous, love-hate (mostly hate) filled years, spanning several countries and a handful of states, I dropped my digital camera one time too many and it is now permanently frozen in a bizarre halfway on halfway off position, with barely enough strength to flash a "LENS ERROR" message. I'm not really sure what to do, since I'm waaay to broke to make another decent investment at this point, and from what I understand this is not an easy problem to fix. I'm thinking of just nabbing another Coolpix L4 off eBay, since, even though it's a piece of crap, I'm familiar with just HOW crappy, so there'll be no surprises...

Do you guys have any suggestions for another cheap-o model that'll get the job done and/or where to buy it? And I'm talkin' CHEAP! And FAST! A blogger without her digital camera is like...well, I could make a lot of analogies, but mostly it is just like "le suck"!

Siri, I feel your pain. I spilled an entire bottle of water on my camera a few months ago and still haven't replaced it! :(

This very same thing happened to me a couple of months ago! I am borrowing a friend's old point and shoot for the time being. But I am going to have to shell out some serious bucks to replace it at some point. Sorry to hear of the camera troubles. Hopefully the comment above will solve them?

I just got my new camera in the mail today (my old one is up for grabs!) but, the amount of doll hairs you'll spend in buying AA batteries will add up to a new camera...
I'm in a similar, but with my computer..... sooo much money.

yep something similar happened to me too and i cant afford a new one either!! things started wurring and clicking one day and now mine over exposes all the time. If you do find a cheap brand that seems kinda decent, let me know!! I'm desperate too! (hint to the wise - never buy a sony)

I found the Nikon Coolpix L11 on ebay here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-Coolpix-L11-6-0-Megapixel_W0QQitemZ200223178868QQihZ010QQcategoryZ107898QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

For the moment it is quite cheap and I heard it is so much better than the Coolpix L4. I guess it could get the job done!

I hope that'll help you!

Get a Best Buy card and buy yourself a good one. Then pay it off a little at a time. :D

Exactly the same thing happened to me, too – I hated the camera though so it was a chuffed/bad thing!
I got the Canon IXUS 70. It's a few years old (I think it's been replaced by the new model) and so pretty cheap, but sooooo much better than my old Fuji. I love it.
Actually, I must say I've always really liked your photos, so it's surprising to hear you weren't so keen!

This comment is in no way related to your camera troubles (though I'm sorry to hear about them and hope you get back to posting those pics soon), BUT I just looked at your link list and I gotta ask: You're from Waldron Island WA? A teeny tiny island in the San Juans? That is ever so strange, all this time I've been following your blog and had no idea. I've lived on Lopez and am moving back there soon. Small internets world...

Thanks so much for the suggestions guys, I think for the moment I'm gonna pursue something in the free vein (hauna rose you've been facebook-ed!), at least until I can save up enough for something semi-decent. Part of me wants to just take this as sign that I need to say "screw digital" once and for all, fully commit to my Ludite ways, and just g ahead and buy a Polaroid SLR, but that, too requires dough, and also, I'm weak and cheap and lazy. Hrrrm.

princess--That's crazy! Yes, I grew up on Waldron, and my parents still have a farm there. I went to high school on San Juan but, would you believe, I've only ever been to Lopez ONCE? I, for one, cannot believe it. Maybe I'll make a day trip this summer!

siri, get a kodak easy share from the kodak ebay store. if you're patient (a few days of browsing and bidding) you can score a refurbished one for seventy bucks, tops. they are 8 megapixel, really user friendly, and guaranteed for a year by the store. i will show you the next time you are over or vice versa!!!!
loveeeeeeeeee and cowboys.

i've put a link up to you and was hoping you'd link to mine too?
thanks x

punky--I actually did google how to fix it, and mostly what was recommended involved a lot of banging and forcing of lenses...all of which, naturally, I tried with gusto--and I definitely made it worse! Strange cracking noises ensued. It's beyond the pale I'm afraid...

and hi joanna! I'm so glad you like my blog, I like yours too and I'd be more than happy to link ya!

I've just started to read your blog and I'd thought I'd leave a comment!

My camera isn't broken, but it's on its last legs. I took it to the beach, and now every so often the lens will only open halfway, giving a somewhat arty, but annoying picture

oh, and do you mind if I link you? :)

i have been so frustrated with my old brick of a coolpix, but you are right there is somethign to be said for at least knowing it's faults beforehahand. the fancier the camera the more thing that can go wrong!

hey there. i sent you an email a while ago asking for a link exchange. did you receive it? anyway, i'm asking you now again, would you like to trade links? thanks!

Ringo, have a banana! said...

lily--I'd love to be linked, but of course!

daiane--Oh jeez, I don't remember an email...but that doesn't mean I didn't get one, because I suck. Consider yourself linked!
