Velvet Goldmine

This is one of those dresses that toes the line between really cute and tacky-90's-hippie revival/something you're 4th grade art teacher might wear on parent-teacher conference day. I think I originally bought it for a costume party, but I ended up taking it in a bit and out into the real world. If nothing else, I'll always keep it for the fabric which I think is just so pretty and, well, velvet-y. It's my dream to someday sew a patchwork velvet quilt, as illustrated by the glorious RUSSH magazine:

(it's also my dream to snuggle down under said quilt in my gypsy caravan in the English countryside, but that's another story all together...)

I like the dress too, especially with a contrasting cardigan.

That fabric is really lovely. I wanted to ask you if you have ever gone to the Chelsea Flea Market on Sunday? It's open allll day. And when I was there this weekend bought two reallly nice vintage shirts for five dollars a piece. One is fifties (it's thin cotton and somehow immaculate!) I know you said you have a tough time finding good, cheap vintage in the city. Just thought I'd let you know!

Oh and Roald Dahl has a gypsy caravan in the English country side! It's really amazing. You should most definitely fufill that dream.

Sarah--somehow, in the nasty weather, I completely forgot about flea markets! Also, after I found out that they had closed my favorite one in the East Village last fall I think I wound up a bit disillusioned. But I definitely plan on doing more flea-shopping in the future. I've also broken my vows and started shopping at Beacon's Closet, I just couldn't resist any longer, though it's been awfully picked over every time I've been lately. Me and Roald Dahl, two peas in a pod!

rachel--I have seen it, many a time, and I love it, even though a lot of people give it a bad rap. I really respect the director, the same one who directed "I'm Not There" actually, and what he went through to try and make a movie that was so close to his heart. Plus, the music is awesome!

I absolutely adore the dress! perfectly vintage excentricity - and isn´t that about making look adorable what your english teacher would pull over?
